Your Home, Only Better

Most homeowners reach a point where their house feels like it’s shrinking. Whether it’s the “morning dance” in a cramped bathroom or the lack of a true private retreat, you shouldn’t have to negotiate for space in your own home. At Mac Reno, we specialize in home additions and suites that don’t just add square footage—they eliminate the daily friction of a house you’ve outgrown.

Imagine a home designed for the way you actually live:

  • A Private Primary Wing: A dedicated space to decompress, featuring an ensuite bathroom designed for two people to get ready for work without bumping elbows.
  • The Hub of the Home: A kitchen built for entertaining, paired with enough bedrooms so everyone has their own corner of the world.
  • Purposeful Spaces: A quiet home office where you can finally shut the door, or a custom gym to sweat away the day’s stress.

Types of Home Additions in Victoria

Primary Suite Additions

A bedroom, walk-in closet, and ensuite that create a private retreat integrated seamlessly with your existing floor plan, so the addition feels like it was always meant to be there.

Second-Storey Additions

When your lot won’t let you build out, building up is often the smartest option. A second-storey addition maximizes square footage without reducing your yard and changes how your home functions and looks.

Kitchen & Family Room Extensions

Open up the main living area, improve flow, and create a space you’ll want to entertain in, connected naturally to what’s already there in both style and structure.

Secondary Suites & In-Law Suites

One of the highest-return investments you can make. Whether it’s a legal rental suite, space for aging parents, or a private suite for an adult child, we design suites that adapt as your needs change. We know local zoning and can guide you through permitting.

Garage Conversions & Home Offices

Turn underused square footage into functional, finished space without the footprint of a full addition.

Grow With Your Family

As your family grows, the way you use your home evolves, too. As young parents, you sleep better knowing your children are in their rooms just down the hall, but as they become teens, you want to give them the space they need to thrive and grow – typically with high levels of noise and activity.

The way you entertain changes, too: kid’s birthday parties with the neighbours or cocktail parties with friends, and holiday feasts when your children bring their own babies to your home. A home addition from MAC Renovations can give you the space you need today with room to grow for tomorrow.

Additional Benefits

The added floor space a Victoria home addition creates can bring additional revenue or in-home care accommodations, ensuring there’s a safe and friendly space for yourself or your parents when they need it.

We’ve built beautiful in-law suites that fit well in today’s rental market, with the plans that down the road, an in-home caregiver can live in the space so that they’re close enough to help you when you need it, but they still have their own private space for their downtime. A bit of planning today can help you age in place tomorrow. Discover how transparent pricing and expert project management can eliminate the stress of home additions—so you can enjoy the extra space without the unexpected surprises.

FAQs About Building a Home Addition in Victoria, BC

How much does a home addition cost in Victoria, BC?

It’s a question every homeowner wants to answer. If you are looking for a ballpark home addition cost, we’d be happy to have a discussion with you to determine the feasibility of your project. The truth is that no square-foot estimate will do your project justice because every project is unique. To avoid disappointment down the road, we recommend clients use our pre-construction services to determine a firm fixed cost. If you are looking for general ideas, Houzz has some great resources for you to consider.

How long does a home addition take?

The biggest source of frustration for people doing renovations is unrealistic schedules. Poor planning by your contractor not only leads to extra costs but also pushes back completion dates. We try to prevent this by ordering all the specialty materials (windows, doors, countertops) as soon as the contract is signed and building a schedule around their arrival dates. You’ll also get access to a dashboard so you can track progress on a daily basis. All of our processes — from our pre-construction checklists to weekly project reviews — are designed to keep your project on time and on budget.

Should I move out during my renovation?

If the option is available to you, by all means, move out. Or plan that long-awaited vacation to happen at the same time (you can stay connected through your online dashboard.) That said, if you have a smaller renovation — a bathroom that is not your only source for showering and toileting, for example — then staying is not a big deal because the work will be localized to a small area and over relatively quickly. Do you have pets or small children? Even more of a reason to vacate. Both will find the noise and activity stressful. No matter how many things we do to accommodate your needs (we use a negative-pressure dust extractor at all times), you will still find your day-to-day routine disrupted. One affordable alternative is to rent a trailer or motorhome and park it on your property (while still allowing easy access to contractors and trades). Here’s a great article on Houzz that outlines the things you may not have considered.

Do I need permits for a home addition in Victoria?

Permits are required for any structural, electrical, or plumbing additions and home renovations in Greater Victoria. Cosmetic or energy efficiency changes like flooring, tiles, windows, doors, and heating systems do not require permits. The process may seem complicated because often, it is. Having an experienced contractor to guide you through this process reduces stress and headaches when you want to sell your home.

What is your warranty policy?

We provide an industry-leading 24-month warranty for the labour and installation of all aspects of our home renovation Victoria projects. We have even repaired things that have occurred after the warranty has expired when we believe our workmanship has not been up to our high standards. We stand behind our work. Period. Our goal is to be your contractor for life.

Can I hire my own subcontractors and buy my own materials?

Sorry, no. We’re required by law to hire the sub-trades because we are listed as the prime contractor under WorkSafeBC regulations, making us responsible if someone gets hurt or exposed to hazardous materials. As for building materials, we’ve negotiated steep contractor discounts that save you money. If you’d like, you can purchase your appliances and finishings. Our long-time relationships with top-quality subcontractors and over four decades of experience working with various products and materials are some of the greatest ways we bring value to your project.
